The Sussex-based Bernardi Music Group - comprised of musicians from the UK’s top ensembles and founded by violinist Andrew Bernardi - have long been deepening the cultural landscape of Sussex, bringing communities together through music, commissioning works based on the rich history and beauty of the area, and reflecting the Wilding efforts happening at the nearby Knepp Castle to counter the extinction crisis. The Group's contributions to Sussex's cultural life have been vast, with commissions including Helen Ottaway’s ‘White Storks’, Cecilia McDowall's ‘Great Hills’, and Paul Lewis' ‘Shipley Concerto’ amongst others.
Andrew Bernardi's 1696 Stradivarius violin - known as the Amici Bernardi Stradivarius violin - is at the heart of everything the group does and is a symbol of the Group's musical excellence. It brings together the Bernardi Orchestra, Stradivarius Piano Trio, the annual Shipley Arts Festival that takes place in local churches, schools and stately homes across rural West Sussex, and the Leonardslee Concert Series, which boosts well-being through its intoxicating mix of music and nature.
Founded by Andrew Bernardi in 1989, the Group aims to inspire and connect people across the globe through music and education, all whilst supporting charitable causes. In recent years, the group has raised over £3.5 million for charities, with Classic FM presenter John Suchet occasionally hosting their concerts in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.
Andrew Bernardi is one of the UK’s leading violinists, festival directors, string educationalists and music entrepreneurs. Previously, he’s performed with several orchestras, including BBC Philharmonic and Royal Philharmonic, and has served as a Tutor at Trinity Laban for over twenty years, with many of his former pupils now in leading positions within the music profession.
