10.30 - Doors open

11.00 - Paul L

Scrumptious Sussex is compered by the ‘Big Beardy Baking Beserker’ of the Sussex food world, local chef and entertainer, Paul Lowe. Paul has worked in many Sussex locations and is a compere like no other. His warmth, banter, personality and humour will more than get the audience warmed up. Paul introduces the very funny pubs historian Dr Janet Pennington, known across the county (and beyond) for her funny, saucy and always entertaining talks. Janet will be more than whetting our appetites with her mischievous tales of ‘Cakes and Ale’.

12.00 - Interval

12.15 - Ian

Next up on the menu is TV and Radio’s Ian Dowding, famed chef of the Hungry Monk restaurant in Jevington and co-author of its famous and widely-selling cookbooks. Ian will be bringing his wit, charm and wealth of experience as a celebrity chef along with his experiences of appearing in several television programmes as chef and food adviser including ‘Regency House Party’ (2003, Channel 4), ‘The Diets that Time Forgot’, and more recently ‘Turn back Time’ for BBC1.He has also appeared on Radio 4’s ‘The Kitchen Cabinet’ but is most famous as the co-creator of Sussex’s most famous ever dessert, Banoffi pie. Ian has penned numerous cookbooks including the wonderfully titled ‘Fish Bananas’ and is now a novelist too, with two novels to his credit, ‘Fish Face’ and his latest offering; a tale of smuggling in Sussex called ‘A Fraternity of Thieves’.

If you’ve never been to one of Ian’s talks you’re in for a treat as his long career has been full of many exciting adventures, and his latest adventure is that we’ll be daring him to see how long we can get him to talk for without mentioning Banoffi pie! He’ll also be inviting those attending the event to bring in their own banoffi pie-themed creations for Ian and Paul to judge, much in the style of ‘Bake Off – An Extra Slice’. Paul is the chef behind what was believed to be the world’s biggest banoffi pie last year and so it will be great to see what these two chefs make of your offerings.

13.00 - Kevin

Our final section on the mirth menu will be light-hearted local historian and humourist Kevin Newman, author of the bestselling ‘Little History of Sussex’ and ‘Pond Puddings and Sussex Smokies’, both now in their second editions and tickling the funnybones of foodies across the county. Kevin will be taking us through the funnier side of the county’s past food and drink, the people that produced it and the places it was enjoyed and eaten. Kevin will also be inviting you to play several Scrumptious Sussex games, such as ‘Scoff – or Keep Well Off?’ where the audience will be asked whether they would eat something from Sussex’s past or not, based solely on its name.

13.45 - Q&A

14.00 - Lunch will be taken with Afternoon Tea (to finish by 3pm)
